Corona Extra PWA World Cup in 2007

THE CORONA EXTRA PWA WORLD CUP Isle of Tiree - Saturday 6 - Saturday 13 October 2007 http://www.tireewaveclassic.com / http://www.pwaworldtour.com News Release - Monday 8 October 2007 Unofficial freestyle event sees the world's best windsurfers pulling off spectacular moves 47 of the The World's best windsurfers at The Corona Extra PWA World Cup, The UK's first ever Wave World Cup, being staged on the Isle of Tiree from 6 - 13 October, were given the opportunity to show off their freestyle tricks today (Monday 8 October). The judges decided to use the calmer weather conditions on the island for an unofficial freestyle expression session jumping contest with one of the event sponsor's, Go Fast Energy Drinks, throwing in a $750 prize pot for the winner. The action took place at Crossapol Beach close to the event HQ, with 15-20 knot onshore winds and bright sunshine more suited to this freestyle sailing. Judges decided on two 15-minute heats with 5 from each heat advancing to a 10-man final. Many pros dropped tricks that are usually second nature but Regis Bouron (FRA), whose jaw dropping table forward scored the most points of the first heat, Victor Fernandez (ESP), with a series of 'shakas' on the way back to the beach, Eleazar Alonso Sanchez (ESP), who pulled off some nice table top forwards, Jonas Ceballos (ESP) and Vidar Jensen (NOR) all progressed to the final. In heat 2 British rider Ben Proffitt, Kauli Seadi (BRA), the current Wave World Cup number one, Kevin Mevissen (NED) and Josh Angulo (Cape Verde) scored enough to make it through to the final. With improving weather conditions for wave sailing judges decided to move the competition to Balephuill Beach on the South West of the Island, where they hoped to start the first elimination round of the official wave competition following the final of the Expression Session. The head judge, Duncan Coombs, also changed the judging criteria from best jump to the best move due to the fact that the waves at Balephuill Beach were bigger than they were for the heats at Crossapol. The wind picked up during the final and the standard of jumps got better and better. Regis Bouron and Ben Proffitt started to throw air chacho's, Fernandez and Bouron pulled off an amazing pair of corkscrews and Vidar Jensen managed a pretty clean crazy pete. Victor Fernandez impressed the judges the most and finished the final with the Go Faster Energy Drinks Super Session title and the €750 prize fund. An attempt was made to run the first heat of the official wave sailing competition but poor weather conditions and bad light forced the judges to cancel it. Ends
